Case study

the.
garage

How I designed a universe born from the dust of a garage, for a B2B platform where AI walks alongside every founder without shouting that it's AI.

Role

Design of the full experience: brand, research, UX, wireframes, UI and creative direction. All in Figma.

Client

Founders who are designers and company builders, and want to help others build theirs.

Product

B2B SaaS with an AI assistant that guides step by step: legal resources, freelancers and more, all in one place.

Status

In production. A story that keeps growing.

01 · The brief

Everything a founder needs, in one place

The founders of the.garage hired me to design the entire experience. They were designers and company builders themselves, and they knew how painful starting is: resources scattered everywhere, lawyers, freelancers, contacts, decisions.

They wanted to bring it all into a single platform, but with an experience that didn't feel like yet another directory. They wanted something agentic: an integrated AI that takes people by the hand and guides them step by step while they build.

02 · The idea

A universe is created from a garage

The name came from the stories of people who start their companies in the garage at home. I held on to that image and flipped it: what if that garage were the origin of an entire universe?

I drew inspiration from Christopher Nolan and Interstellar, from how macro shots turn dust into cosmic dust. Stars are born out of nothing. Out of the dust that settles in a garage, great universes are born. That was the proposal the founders loved.

03 · The brand

A door to space

The dust dissolves and begins to take the shape of the garage: the rectangle, the door. The identity came from there. An elongated, rectangular typeface in tune with that proportion, and a spatial light projected from the door, a symbol of all the possibilities on the other side.

04 · The experience

An interface that guides, not overwhelms

Behind it was a lot of user research to find the right flow, along with UX and wireframes. The rule was to show the least information possible, only what the founder needs at each moment of building their company, and not throw everything at them at once.

The assistant talks to them, writes to them, proposes ideas and shows paths, inside a very sensory experience that keeps them inspired and focused. Because interfaces are designed for that: to protect the focus of someone with a thousand things on their mind.

Two more directions worth exploring

Black hole. Pure depth: something that sucks everything in and creates a ring of light, with an endless amount of ideas inside. A powerful metaphor for a product where there is always a next step.

Auroras and geometry. The mix of blues and yellows of auroras and the glints of galaxies, combined with geometric shapes. Something cosmic, spatial and a little psychedelic.

06 · AI, truly integrated

Let AI be felt, not shouted

This is a very AI-driven project, and not only in the product. I used it extensively in my workflow to explore many ideas fast. What a team of 20 people used to do, a team of 5 can do today, and what 5 used to do, one person with good judgment can do.

And that's the philosophy of the product too. AI is already part of our lives, so it doesn't have to desperately sell itself as "AI". In the.garage the assistant is just there, discreet and useful, helping the founder stay focused.

07 · What I take away

Art, business and product, in the same place

This is what I'm passionate about: taking artistic and creative concepts and aligning them with business needs to create products that are complex but simple, assisted but human. the.garage is still in production and I wanted to share its story because it shows exactly how I work.

I've spent 11+ years taking ideas from a blank page to a live product, for startups and companies across several countries. Brand, UX, UI and the front-end too, so what you approve in design is exactly what ships.

I'm Juan, 31 y/o, from Colombia. I started designing in my early twenties and I haven't been able to stop since. I'm hooked on one thing: watching a rough idea, something that only lives in someone's head, turn into a real product people can click, use and feel. That's the passion that keeps me going.

Here's what I believe: art, business and product belong in the same place. Most people pick a side, the pretty or the strategic, and I don't think you should have to choose. I want your interface to look incredible, make sense to the people using it and actually move the business. If it misses one of those, we keep going. And when you hire me, I take your project personally.

And honestly, AI is something I've been waiting for a long time. For years my ideas moved faster than what was possible to build. Now it's finally even. An idea can meet reality way sooner. You can test it, see if people actually want it, and build it, with agents doing a lot of the heavy lifting. That means a lot of products can now be designed and built by the same creative mind, and that's exactly how I work, with the taste and the decisions still mine.

I'm Top Rated on Upwork with a 100% Job Success Score, and you don't have to take my word for it. You can see my history there: 27+ successful projects.

So if you've got an idea you can't stop thinking about, I'd love to hear it.
